FHE: Fire Safety

Now that we have moved to a new house, we thought we should talk about our fire safety plan.  We reminded the kids about what they should do if they hear the smoke alarm - roll out of bed, crawl across the floor and feel the door. (not the handle)  If the door is warm, stay where they are, if not, open the door and stay low.  Then we talked about the nearest exits from each room and what to do if a throughway is obstructed and let everyone know where the emergency ladder is upstairs.  We also talked about stop, drop and roll and practiced that.  Then we had the older kids walk our 3-year old through all the things we had talked about.

FHE: Emergency Preparedness

I decided to talk about Emergency Preparedness stuff (mostly food storage) on my family blog this month, and thought maybe I should have a lesson on it for the kids too.

I pretty much followed this lesson exactly.

Our practice phone conversations with the "911 operator" (me) were hilarious, yet have convinced me that maybe just telling them to go to a neighbor's is the way to go...

FHE: Earthquake Safety

Here is a great handout I found about earthquake safety.  We basically just talked about what an earthquake is/feels like and went over some of the basic safety info in the handout.  We practiced getting under a table/desk, covering and holding on. We also practiced what to do if you woke up in an earthquake and took turns causing "earthquakes" for each other in their sleep so they could practice, which everyone found very fun.  This lesson was much quicker than fire safety, I don't think there is as much to go over, but I feel good that my children are more prepared and they both had fun (even if my 19-mo old was oblivious to what we were really trying to get across...)

Side note: I was thrilled that my 3 year old sond remembered what we talked about last week (fire safety) and remembered what to do if his clothes ever caught on fire. :)
